Alfred Ilg (1854-1916), one of the most renowned Swiss expatriates was in Ethiopia from 1879 to 1906. At first he worked there as engineer, then as councillor of state in close cooperation with the Emperor Menilek II. Despite his wide ranging functions, Ilg found the time to amass a large ethnographic collection during this period and also produced an important photographic oeuvre.

The first part of this volume comprises an introduction to Alfred Ilg’s life and a description of Ethiopia at that time, focussing on Ilg’s and Emperor Menilek’s achievements. This part is illustrated with Ilg’s own documentary photographs. His ethnographic collection is presented in the second part, with the emphasis on the sumptuous objects from the court environment. This richly illustrated textual and photographic work, created in conjunction with an exhibition, offers not only an insight into Alfred Ilg’s life but also takes the reader on an exciting journey into Christian Ethiopia, to a country with an immense wealth of cultural treasures.

Alfred Ilg (1854-1916), einer der bedeutendsten Auslandschweizer, weilte von 1879 bis 1906 in Äthiopien. Dort arbeitete er vorerst als Ingenieur, dann als Staatsrat eng mit dem damaligen Kaiser Menilek IL zusammen. Trotz seiner vielfältigen Aufgaben hat Ilg während dieser Zeit eine grosse ethnographische Sammlung zusammengetragen und ein bedeutendes fotografisches Werk geschaffen.

Der Band enthält im ersten Teil eine Einführung in das Leben Alfred Ilgs und eine Beschreibung des damaligen Äthiopiens, wobei die Leistungen Ilgs und Kaiser Menileks im Zentrum stehen. Illustriert wird dieser Teil mit dokumentarischen Aufnahmen Ilgs. Im zweiten Teil wird seine ethnographische Sammlung präsentiert, wobei das Schwergewicht auf Prunkobjekten aus dem Umfeld des Hofes liegt. Der reich illustrierte Text- und Bildband, der im Zusammenhang mit einer Ausstellung entstanden ist, bietet einen Einblick in das Leben Alfred Ilgs, und er nimmt die Leserinnen und Leser mit auf eine spannende Reise ins christliche Äthiopien, in ein Land, das ungeheuer reich an kulturellen Schätzen ist.
