Herbert et Della Hanson, un couple de missionnaires américains, arrivent en Ethiopie à la mi-septembre 1934. Dans la première partie du livre, Herbert raconte leur activité avant et pendant l’occupation italienne et les liens qu’ils tissent avec l’Empereur. En 1939, le couple est contraint de quitter l’Ethiopie mais non sans avoir obtenu des autorités colonisatrices un visa d’une année qui leur permettra d’y retourner en 1940. La deuxième partie est de la main de Della qui intervient à maintes reprises dans l’intendance du palais impérial. En 1955, ils quittent l’Ethiopie après 20 ans de bons et loyaux services à l’Empereur et sa famille.
