Introduction

Humphrey did not set out to collect Military History, but to his eternal credit, and occasional temporary debit, he understood the importance of the campaigns and expeditions that were undertaken in his chosen region. The collection was not built campaign by campaign but with an understanding of the continuities, often reflected in individual careers, and discontinuities of history. In order to organise this catalogue it was decided that a simple alphabetical listing would not serve the books well and that some sort of workable chronological taxonomy should be established. To this end the books have been divided into rough « campaign » or thematic groups. Inevitably there were some items that did not fit happily under one heading or another – does Leake’s Map of Egypt really belong in a section largely concerned with the Expedition of 1882 ? Should Kitchener be annexed to the Sudan in general, or does he belong more specifically to Omdurman? Where to place a Military Report on the Sudan produced in 1927 ? Wherever possible, items have been catalogued where it was felt that they had the greatest relevance, and in the process the enigmatic, but unappealing, « General » section was kept to a manageable minimum. As regards the Regimental Histories section, where things were found to relate exclusively to a particular campaign. they were placed in the relevant section, otherwise they were put in the Regimental Histories section at the end. It is sincerely hoped that this process will not offend too many sensibilities and will have rendered the list of more practical use to those interested.
